Composition Techniques

R3.3 Run & Gun Lighting Vs Best Case Scenario
Overview
In this module, students will learn the value of using portable and unobtrusive lighting modifiers, like flash benders, mini softboxes, snoots, and grids in wedding photography. These tools allow for the creation of diverse lighting effects without compromising the event’s aesthetic or obstructing guests’ views. Despite their efficacy in different settings, larger modifiers such as strip boxes, clamshell reflectors, and large softboxes may be less suitable for weddings due to their size and potential to disrupt the venue layout and guests’ experiences. The aim is to equip students with the ability to capture the beauty and emotion of a wedding while maintaining a discreet presence.
By The End of This Lesson Students Will Be Able To
- Understand the importance of unobtrusive, portable lighting modifiers in wedding photography, including flash benders, mini softboxes, snoots, and grids, to not obstruct the live audience or the guests’ view.
- Utilize flash benders, which provide versatility in shaping and directing light, aiding in creating softer, more diffused lighting.
- Apply mini softboxes, designed specifically for speedlights or portable flashes, to create a larger, softer light source for flattering wedding photos.
- Use snoots or small, tube-like modifiers to focus the light on a specific part of a scene, helping create accent and hairlight-like effects.
- Implement grids or honeycomb grids to control the spread of light for selective illumination, adding depth and dimension to wedding images.
- Appreciate the unique benefits each light modifier offers for wedding photography, enabling a diverse range of lighting effects without disrupting the wedding’s aesthetic.
- Recognize that while strip boxes, clamshell reflectors, and large softboxes are exceptional for studio and outdoor photoshoots, their bulk may detract from the wedding’s aesthetic and obstruct guests’ views.
- Acknowledge the usefulness of strip boxes in creating dramatic effects, while also understanding their potential disruption to venue layout due to their size.
- Understand the benefits of clamshell reflectors for portrait photography, while considering their potential obstruction in a wedding setting due to their curved, bulky design.
- Assess the pros and cons of large softboxes, which offer beautifully soft, even light, but their size could potentially obstruct guests’ view and disrupt the venue’s layout.
- Choose smaller, more portable light modifiers for wedding photography to capture the beauty and emotion of the occasion without compromising the overall experience.

Wedding Lighting- The Best Off Camera Lighting Modifiers for Weddings
Flash benders, mini softboxes, snoots, and grids are all excellent options for portable, low footprint light modifiers that do not obstruct the view of the audience during a wedding or event. These modifiers offer flexibility and adaptability, allowing photographers to create various lighting effects and intensities without compromising the guests’ experience.
Flash benders are a versatile and lightweight solution for controlling the direction and shape of light from your flash unit. They are made of flexible, bendable material, which allows you to manipulate the shape of the light output. By changing the angle and direction of the light, you can bounce it off walls, ceilings, or other surfaces to create softer, more diffused lighting. This flexibility is particularly helpful when working in a dynamic environment like a wedding, where you may need to quickly adjust your lighting setup to accommodate changing conditions.
Mini softboxes are another portable option for wedding photographers seeking to create softer, more flattering light. These compact softboxes are designed specifically for speedlights or portable flashes and can be attached directly to your flash unit. Mini softboxes come in various shapes and sizes, each with its unique effect on the light output. By diffusing the light through the softbox material, you can create a larger, softer light source that is ideal for capturing the natural beauty and emotion of the couple and their guests.
Snoots or any small, tube-like modifiers that can be used to narrow the beam of light, creating a more focused and accent and hairlight-like effect. This is particularly useful when you want to draw attention to specific parts of a scene or subject while keeping the rest of the image darker. Snoots can also help create dramatic, moody lighting effects by isolating your subjects from their surroundings. Their small size and ease of use make them an ideal addition to a wedding photographer’s toolkit.
Grids, or honeycomb grids, are attachments that can be placed on your speedlight or flash unit to control the spread of light, creating a more focused and directional light source. By limiting the light’s spread, grids allow you to selectively illuminate your subject or specific parts of the scene, adding depth and dimension to your images. Grids come in various degrees of tightness, which determines the light beam’s angle and the resulting effect on your photos.
Each of these light modifiers offers unique benefits for wedding photography, allowing you to create a diverse range of lighting effects while maintaining a low profile and not obstructing guests’ views. Their portability and adaptability make them ideal tools for capturing the beauty, emotion, and atmosphere of a wedding without drawing attention to your equipment.
Strip boxes, clamshell reflectors, and large softboxes are exceptional light modifiers that produce stunning results for studio work and outdoor photoshoots. However, they may not be the best choice for wedding photographers who prioritize the aesthetics of the wedding and wish to avoid obstructing the guests’ view.
Strip boxes are long, narrow softboxes that produce a thin, soft band of light. While they excel in creating dramatic lighting effects and are ideal for accentuating a subject’s features, their size can be a hindrance in a wedding setting. They take up considerable space and may detract from the venue’s carefully planned decorations and layout. Additionally, their placement could obstruct the guests’ view and disrupt the overall ambiance.
Clamshell reflectors are light modifiers characterized by their single, curved shape, which resembles a clamshell. They are designed to produce flattering, even lighting on the subject’s face by filling in shadows, reducing contrast, and creating a captivating “U”-shaped catchlight in the subject’s eyes. This effect enhances the overall appearance of the subject, making it an appealing option for portrait photography.
Despite their effectiveness in creating beautiful lighting, clamshell reflectors may not be the best choice for wedding photographers who prioritize the aesthetics of the wedding and wish to avoid obstructing the guests’ view. The curved design, while instrumental in shaping the light, can be bulky and obtrusive in a wedding setting. Their size and positioning may detract from the venue’s carefully planned decorations and layout, and they could potentially obstruct the guests’ view, negatively impacting the overall ambiance.
Large softboxes are popular for their ability to produce beautifully soft, even light that wraps around the subject. However, their size can make them unwieldy and difficult to maneuver in a wedding setting. In addition to occupying considerable space, large softboxes may disrupt the venue’s layout and obstruct the guests’ view, diminishing their overall experience.
In summary, while strip boxes, clamshell reflectors, and large softboxes are excellent light modifiers for various types of photography, their size and bulk make them less suitable for wedding photographers who prioritize preserving the wedding’s aesthetics and not obstructing guests’ views. Smaller, more portable light modifiers such as flash benders, mini softboxes, snoots, and grids offer a more discreet and unobtrusive solution for capturing the beauty and emotion of a wedding without compromising the overall experience for the couple and their guests.
